Boos at Leeds v Man City during Ramadan pause 'massively disappointing'

An anti-racism and discrimination organisation has condemned booing heard at Elland Road after a Ramadan break during Leeds United’s Premier League match against Manchester City on Saturday.

Kick it Out said the response was "massively disappointing."

Play was briefly paused in the 13th minute under a pre-arranged protocol to allow Manchester City's Muslim players observing Ramadan to break their fast.

A message was displayed on the scoreboard in the stadium which read: "As tonight's match takes place inside the holy month of Ramadan, play has been paused briefly to allow players to break their fast."

However, loud jeers were heard around the ground.

City had three Muslim players on the pitch - Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Omar Marmoush - and Abdukodir Khusanov on the bench.

Pausing the game to allow Muslim players to break their fast during the holy month has been an agreed protocol for several years.

Kick It Out said the crowd reaction shows there is "still a long way for football to go."

"It’s an important and visible part of making the game welcoming for Muslim players and communities. But as tonight’s reaction shows, football still has a long way to go in terms of education and acceptance."

City won 1-0 with an Antoine Semenyo strike at the end of the first half.

Leeds United have been contacted for a comment.
