Florent Ghisolfi outlines ‘powerful message’ ambition as Dan Ballard signs new Sunderland deal

The centre-back has committed his long-term future to the Black Cats after an outstanding Premier League campaign

Sunderland have confirmed that Dan Ballard has signed a new contract, extending his stay at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2029, with the club holding the option of a further year.

The 26-year-old defender has enjoyed an outstanding debut Premier League campaign following his integral role in last season’s promotion-winning campaign. His new deal represents a significant statement of intent from the club as they continue building under Régis Le Bris and sporting director Florent Ghisolfi.

Ballard has now made 114 appearances in red and white since arriving on Wearside in June 2022, scoring eight goals. Among those was one of the most iconic moments in recent Sunderland history - his last-minute winner against Coventry City in the play-off semi-final that sent the Black Cats to Wembley.

This season, Ballard has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dominant centre-backs. Sunderland have recorded eight clean sheets in 27 top-flight matches, with the Northern Ireland international also contributing four goal involvements.

Speaking after signing his new deal, Ballard said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have signed a new contract. From the moment we began talks, it felt like an easy decision, and I’m happy to be extending my time at the Club. Achieving promotion last season was incredible, and I feel very fortunate to have played a part in some special moments in the club’s recent history. My aim this season was to stay in the team, compete every day, and keep working hard to contribute. Hopefully, I can continue improving and help drive the club forward for many years to come.”

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi believes the extension reflects both Ballard’s importance and the club’s long-term vision. “Dan represents both the legacy and the future of Sunderland AFC,” Ghisolfi said. “He embodies our identity through his professionalism, consistency, and spirit. He has grown into a Premier League defender, but just as importantly, he has become a leader within our dressing room. We are proud that he believes in our purpose and our ambition. His commitment to Sunderland is a powerful message about who we are and what we intend to build.”

The announcement comes on the same evening Ballard is set to be honoured at the North East Football Writers’ Association annual dinner at Ramside, where he will receive the prestigious Player of the Year award - becoming the first men’s player to claim the accolade since Jermain Defoe in 2016.
