Jacob Ramsey fell ill during Newcastle United’s defeat to Everton and had to be withdrawn at half-time.

The 24-year-old returned to the starting line-up after missing Tuesday’s Champions League play-off second-leg win over Qarabag due to a hamstring issue.

And Ramsey showed no ill effects in the first half as he equalised to cancel out Jarrad Branthwaite’s opener before Beto restored the Toffees’ lead less than two minutes later.

Newcastle United explain Jacob Ramsey withdrawal

As Newcastle emerged for the second half, Ramsey looked set to continue but had to be replaced by Joe Willock after vomiting on the pitch.

The Magpies were aware at half-time that the midfielder was feeling unwell but he wished to continue. However, once he began being sick, there was little choice but to bring him off.

Explaining the situation, Eddie Howe said: “It looked like an illness. At first, I was aware it was at half-time. He felt he could continue, but it was obvious at the start of that half that he couldn't.”

Without Ramsey, Howe’s men slipped to a 3-2 defeat. Jacob Murphy equalised in the 82nd minute but the visitors immediately regained the lead through Thierno Barry.

Jacob Ramsey issues message on social media

Following the match, Ramsey took to social media to react to his first Newcastle goal at St James’ Park but did not address the situation that led to his withdrawal.

He did, however, suggest he would be OK for Wednesday’s Premier League clash at home to Manchester United.

Ramsey wrote: “Proud to have my first goal in front of you all at SJP! Pick ourselves up and go again Wednesday.”

However, his former Aston Villa teammate and close friend Morgan Rogers saw the funny side, replying with a puke emoji in the comments.

Newcastle United enter a season-defining couple of weeks

Newcastle will hope to have Ramsey available versus Man United and the crucial period that follows after that.

After Man United, the Magpies host Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup before a trip to Chelsea in the Premier League falls either side of their Champions League last 16 two-legged clash against Barcelona.

Howe’s side then end the month with the Tyne-Wear derby clash at home to Sunderland, where they will be desperate for revenge after losing the reverse fixture 1-0 at the Stadium of Light in December.

“Certainly in relation to the Premier League, our form for a while has not been strong enough, it's not been good enough,” said Howe after Newcastle slipped to 12th in the table, 12 points below the top five at seven points behind 7th. “We know that, we take responsibility for that.

“It's been really frustrating for us and that is the perils of Europe, I'm afraid. We've tried to be laser-focused on every game and give attention to every game with the same importance, but with the deluge of games, your focus can be swayed.

“Our Premier League return in recent weeks has been nowhere near the level it has been historically. Our home form has been so reliable for us, it's tailed off. We've got to try and grab that back as quickly as possible.

“We love playing here, we want this to be our place where we pick up the most points, where the players feel free to play and through our own performances that hasn't been the case.”
