Carrick issues verdict on Sesko 'gamble' after huge Man Utd victory

Partnership: Benjamin Sesko has found form under Michael Carrick

Michael Carrick has revealed that he had no qualms about starting Benjamin Sesko against Crystal Palace.

The Slovenian striker had not been named to one of Carrick’s starting lineups before Sunday, but he got the nod at Old Trafford - and scored the winner - after a rash of impressive substitute performances.

He was not heavily involved in the first-half, but headed home beyond a helpless Dean Henderson in the second to secure a crucial three points for United.

And, speaking at full-time, Carrick was full of praise for Sesko, saying he was pleased to see the player acclimatising to life in the Premier League.

"(Starting Sesko) is not a gamble,” he began. “It wasn't that big of a decision.

“Benjamin is in a good place and he has had a major impact in recent weeks. He's learning what it feels like to play here and to score the winner today is fantastic.

“We are here to help and I'm sure that will continue. He is willing to do whatever that is."

Sesko’s goal on Sunday takes his tally for the season to nine goals and two assists in 28 appearances. Six of those goals have come since the turn of the year.

“Fernandes always steps up, he would never do anything else. It was big with the red card and the penalty."
