Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle shared an emotional hospital update after hamstring surgery this week
Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle has shared an emotional update from hospital after undergoing surgery on his hamstring injury.
Mundle once again injured his hamstring against Fulham at the Stadium of Light last weekend, with initial fears over the severity of the problem quickly confirmed. The winger has now revealed he has had an operation, posting a photo from his hospital bed with his leg in a brace. Alongside the image, Mundle wrote: “Hardest period I’ve ever been through, but I’ve been through it before and will do it again! Thank you for all the support recently,” accompanied by a heart emoji.
The setback represents another frustrating chapter for the 23-year-old, who has shown flashes of real promise when fit throughout his Sunderland career. Injuries have disrupted his rhythm at key moments, and the timing - with Sunderland battling through a demanding Premier League schedule - is far from ideal.
Sunderland have yet to confirm an exact timeline for his recovery, but hamstring surgery typically rules players out for a significant period. The post prompted an outpouring of support from teammates and fans alike, with many wishing him a speedy recovery. It has been a bruising period for the young winger. In addition to the physical setback, Mundle was also subjected to alleged racist abuse online following his substitute appearance against Fulham - abuse that is now under police investigation.
The UK Football Policing Unit confirmed it had received four separate reports of abuse directed at Premier League players over the weekend. Mundle was among those targeted, alongside Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare, Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri.
Chief Constable Mark Roberts, head of the UKFPU, said: “There is absolutely no place for racial abuse, either online or in person, and anyone who believes they can hide behind their keyboards should think again. “The UKFPU condemns this abhorrent behaviour, and we will ensure that, through our dedicated team of officers, we do everything possible to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Sunderland confirmed that Mundle had been the victim of similar online attacks, prompting widespread condemnation. Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out also issued a statement of support. “We stand in solidarity with Wolves’ Tolu Arokodare and Sunderland’s Romaine Mundle,” the statement read.
“This has been an appalling weekend after four players called out the racist abuse they’ve received on social media. But the sad fact is, we know it happens regularly. The message from them is loud and clear: action must follow. Players cannot be expected to tolerate this behaviour, and nor should anyone else.”
