Michael Carrick was impressed with how Bruno Fernandes stepped up at the key moment from the spot-kick in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils were awarded a spot-kick after Maxence Lacroix brought summer signing Matheus Cunha down in a clumsy challenge in the second half on Sunday.

Maxence Lacroix, who opened the scoring for Crystal Palace in the first half, was sent off after VAR intervention led to a red card decision being handed out.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up for Manchester United’s penalty against Crystal Palace and the Red Devils skipper cancelled out Lacroix’s first-half opener at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s reaction to Bruno Fernandes’ performance in Man Utd’s 2-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace

Bruno Fernandes sent former Manchester United teammate Dean Henderson the wrong way from his penalty-kick effort in the second half of Sunday’s 2-1 win.

The 31-year-old Man Utd captain would make an impact on the match again in the 65th minute, with Fernandes setting up striker Benjamin Sesko for the winner.

Speaking after Man Utd’s encounter with Crystal Palace, Carrick praised Fernandes for “always” stepping up when the Red Devils have needed him the most.

“He takes responsibility. Dean Henderson has saved many penalties, so it was a good duel,” he told BBC’s Match of the Day, as per BBC Sport.

“Fernandes always steps up; he would never do anything else. It was big with the red card and the penalty.”

United picked up their sixth Premier League win under Carrick’s reign and the interim boss was thrilled at how his side bounced back from their first-half deficit.

“I’m delighted with the win and the way we responded to a slow start,” he said.

United legend Carrick added: “Credit to Palace, they started the game really sharply and brightly.

“We showed that belief and personality and we finished the first half well. To overcome going a goal down so early, that was a new challenge for us.

“You have to do that at certain times; it has to be perfect.”

United have climbed to third place in the Premier League table after Sunday’s result and the Red Devils are level on points with fourth-place Aston Villa.
