Frustrating new Leeds United injury blow should open door for obvious Sunderland decision

Leeds United centre-back Joe Rodon looked to be struggling with a hamstring problem during the second half against Manchester City.

The Whites are heading into crunch time in the Premier League survival fight with a strong position behind us. Six points has remained the difference as everyone from 19th-placed Burnley up to 13th-placed Newcastle United were beaten.

Leeds were largely expected to come away from a home test with Manchester City on the losing side. Conversely, a valiant display only serves as more fuel for Daniel Farke’s survival push.

Leeds United hit with new Joe Rodon injury concern ahead of Sunderland test

Leeds don’t have any time to dwell on refereeing injustice that was on display during Saturday’s defeat. Focus has to shift immediately to putting things right on Tuesday.

We face Sunderland at home to Tuesday night looking to get back to winning ways with a statement win that would put us one step closer to safety.

However, Farke may have to cope without one of his key centre-backs. Unfortunately, Joe Rodon was seen clutching his hamstring in the second half after an energy-sapping performance from the Welshman.

Rodon was withdrawn shortly before full-time with assistant Eddie Riemer confirming an injury post-match:

“I think it’s his hamstring. We need to assess him; hopefully, it’s not too serious,” he said, via the YEP.

Jaka Bijol must start for Leeds United against Sunderland as Daniel Farke sweats on Joe Rodon fitness

Rodon’s pace and box defending has been exemplary in the Premier League. Although, I do think he could have done better to stop Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross to Antoine Semenyo.

That being said, I found it odd that Jaka Bijol was left out of the lineup against City. We knew how much defending in our box we’d have to do, so his presence could have been key.

Against Sunderland, it seems obvious to me that Rodon being an injury doubt should pave the way for Rodon to be brought back into the starting XI.

James Justin has been exceptional on the right side with Jayden Bogle. Meanwhile, Pascal Struijk is nigh-on irreplaceable on the left side, meaning there isn’t much up for debate. That central position is one of them, knowing how good Bijol is.

As much as I wouldn’t want to be dropping Rodon, an injury makes the decision much easier regarding Bijol.
