How Mikel Arteta's half-time message drove Arsenal to Chelsea victory

Mikel Arteta admitted he used Arsenal's win over Tottenham to inspire the Gunners to another derby victory, as they moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Seven days after a 4-1 thrashing of Spurs in the north London derby, Arteta's side had to respond to the pressure of Manchester City's victory over Leeds on Saturday.

They did it in style, beating the Blues in north London to strengthen their grip on first place, with William Saliba and Jurrien Timber scoring from corners and a Piero Hincapie own goal sandwiched in between, to secure a result that keeps Arsenal firmly in control of the title race.

It had not been without its nervy moments, as Arsenal had been well on top before Hincapie diverted a header into his own net just before the interval, leaving it 1-1 at the break.

An eerily familiar situation, given the same scoreline had greeted them in the dressing room against Tottenham a week earlier.

Arteta made sure his players remembered that and told them exactly what they had managed to produce in that second half against Spurs and challenged them to replicate it.

"I reminded them that we were in the exact same position against Spurs seven days ago in that dressing room," Arteta said.

"I said, look what happened in the second half, so we're going to do it again."

A challenging second half saw Arsenal take Arteta's advice on board and come away with all three points in the crucial London derby.

However, the one sour note was the fitness of Declan Rice, who was forced off in the second half with Arteta admitting he will need to be assessed ahead of the Gunners' next game against Brighton on Wednesday.
