Gary Neville has admitted he "cant believe" he now expects Manchester United to secure third place, considering their position before Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils claimed a sixth victory in seven matches under Carrick on Sunday, mounting a comeback against Crystal Palace. Their remarkable form has included triumphs over the top two in Arsenal and Manchester City, leaving them well-placed for Champions League qualification.

United have leapfrogged Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa after collecting 19 points from a possible 21, and now Neville - who habitually backs his former club for top-four finishes whatever their circumstances - genuinely believes they'll achieve it.

The Sky Sports analyst also hopes Villa can maintain their position in the top five. Unai Emery's side have suffered a significant slump - securing just three victories in their previous ten fixtures - since the new year began, and suffered defeat to bottom-placed Wolves last week.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, he said: "I think United will definitely finish third. I can't believe I'm saying that from where they were six weeks ago. But, they've got no distractions, something good is going on, all the momentum.

"I think Liverpool finish fourth and I think Chelsea will finish fifth. I hope Villa finish in the top five, I really do. I've said before that their manager is an experienced and wise guy. If they get some players back; midfield players being injured have cost them in the last few weeks.

"I just think it will Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. The only doubt will be Chelsea or Villa for fifth.

"Injuries will be a big factor. Other competitions will be a big factor. At the moment, they're in danger Villa. They're vulnerable in terms of the Champions League places."

The clubs battling for Champions League qualification must face each other as the campaign enters its crucial phase. Within a fortnight, United will welcome Villa to Old Trafford whilst they must still travel to Stamford Bridge and entertain Liverpool at home.

The outcome of those fixtures could significantly alter the top-five landscape. The Reds are the only contenders not competing in Europe, reducing the burden on their playing staff whilst allowing greater preparation time between matches.

United have suffered back-to-back campaigns without Champions League football, but might break a three-year absence should they accomplish their objective this season.
