Manchester United initiate contact to sign 2 Newcastle United players

Manchester United are certain to sign a midfielder in the summer window, with Casemiro already having announced his exit. The 34-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and it won’t be renewed.

This will see the Red Devils move into the market for a replacement, and a Newcastle United pair are being targeted. As reported by major Spanish newspaper AS, Manchester United have a number of targets and are already making efforts.

The men in question are Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Wolves’ João Gomes.

For the latter three it’s nothing new, all of them have been linked endlessly with a move to Old Trafford.

It’s the Newcastle United claims which are something of a step forward.

What’s new in the transfer claims

Informal contacts are said to have been made, with Manchester United contacting the entourage of both Magpies players.

Indeed, it’s even claimed Casemiro has recommended Guimarães personally.

How much trust to put in the AS claims is unclear. Given the number of players mentioned, and the information shared, it would have to be from a Manchester United source if true.

The additional Casemiro information may point in that direction, but it all takes quite some believing. It’s unlikely Casemiro even knows who Manchester United are targeting to replace him. Equally unlikely is that he has much input into that matter.

Newcastle United would be reluctant to sell either, especially to a Premier League rival in the summer. Much will depend on whether the Magpies qualify for the Champions League, and their subsequent financial situation.

Manchester United’s own participation in the competition will also be important although their finances aren’t as dependent on that as Newcastle’s are.

For Sandro Tonali, a return to Serie A has been pushed in Italy since the midfielder left, and Juventus are trying to work out the finances for an attempt.
