Casemiro 'picks his own Man Utd replacement' as £170m transfer funds released

His upcoming departure means it will be even more important for the Red Devils to add quality in the engine room before the start of the 2026/27 season. A number of big-name players, including the likes of Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, have already been linked with potential summer moves to United. Casemiro, however, reportedly wants them to consider a different candidate.

He has reportedly recommended Bruno Guimaraes as the ideal signing, according to Spanish outlet AS. The two players are international team-mates for Brazil and Casemiro reportedly believes his fellow countryman would be the perfect choice.

United are already thought to be keeping tabs on the Newcastle playmaker, viewing him as a 'foundational player for the future'.

However, it's claimed the Magpies are firmly opposed to selling him and have opened talks with a view to extending his contract at St James' Park.

The report adds that United will free up around £170million in the summer to spend on at least one new midfielder and more signings in other positions.

Those in power at Old Trafford are aware that replacing Casemiro with another quality operator will come at a 'steep price', given market trends over the last few years.

United are said to have previously held ‘informal’ talks with the representatives of both Guimaraes and his fellow Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali. However, it would ‘likely’ take an offer in excess of £125m to acquire the services of either player.

Both midfielders are set to be involved against the Red Devils when Newcastle welcome them to St James' Park on Wednesday night.

In terms of other targets, Anderson remains firmly on United’s radar after a stellar 18 months at club and international level, but there is said to be uncertainty over the 23-year-old's asking price.

The amount of money it will take to sign Anderson will depend on whether Nottingham Forest achieve Premier League survival. He is also expected to play a major role for England at this summer's World Cup, which may further increase his valuation.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is also believed to be on United's list of midfield targets, having initially been linked with a move to Old Trafford during the January transfer window.
