Bruno Fernandes has provided an insight into Benjamin Sesko’s determination to be a success at Manchester United. Sesko scored the winning goal for United in their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday at Old Trafford.

United’s win over Palace moved them up to third place in the Premier League table, leapfrogging Aston Villa, who were beaten by Wolves earlier in the weekend.

Michael Carrick has now won six of his seven matches as United’s interim head coach, with that form seeing the club get into a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.

Sesko has played a key role in United’s recent run of form, scoring four goals across the last five matches to take his tally up to nine for the season across all competitions in his debut season at Old Trafford.

Fernandes provided the assist to Sesko for his winning goal against United, and the Red Devils captain has explained how his teammate is fully aware of the expectations that are on him to perform since his arrival last summer.

"He's [Sesko] a very good player, we just wanted to get his confidence,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.

“He is a kid that wants to improve. He is never just happy with a goal. He is very aware that he needs to score week in, week out for this club.

“Hopefully he will have more goals between now and the end of the season."

Fernandes also reflected on United’s quest to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, which would be enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

United are in third place heading into a midweek round of fixtures level on points with Aston Villa, who dropped to fourth, and three ahead of Liverpool who are fifth after their win over West Ham over the weekend.

"There are a lot of games to go still and it is important that we don't feel that we are in the position that we need to be,” Fernandes said. “We need to make as many points as we can."

United face an away trip to Newcastle this week as they take on Eddie Howe’s team at St James’ Park on Wednesday night. With fixtures taking place on Tuesday in the Premier League, United could find themselves lower in the table by the time kick-off arrives on Tyneside.
