'The spirit is very high': Bruno Fernandes says Man Utd's'positive'turning point came before Michael Carrick's spell

Bruno Fernandes is convinced that Manchester United’s turnaround in fortunes was sparked in the Premier League in late 2025 ahead of Michael Carrick’s Old Trafford return.

Michael Carrick has overseen a sensational run as Manchester United interim head coach, with the Red Devils climbing to third place under his watch at the club.

The 44-year-old United legend has engineered six Premier League wins from seven matches since his appointment to the Old Trafford hot seat in January.

The Red Devils are undefeated in their last seven Premier League fixtures and United have only dropped points to West Ham after a 1-1 away draw last month.

Patrick Dorgu scored a stunning first-half volley to seal United’s victory over Newcastle and Fernandes believes the match was the ‘turning point’ for his side.

“We are going through a very good spell,” he said after Sunday’s result against Crystal Palace, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“A positive spell. We knew we were capable of this. It’s not from there [Carrick taking over], it’s from Newcastle on Boxing Day, a while ago.”

Bruno Fernandes on the significance of Man Utd’s momentum under Michael Carrick ahead of the upcoming Newcastle match

Man Utd defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 in a comeback win at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with Fernandes scoring from the spot-kick and picking up an assist.

Following United’s encounter with Palace, Fernandes insisted that the Red Devils’ next Premier League clash against Newcastle is a huge test for their momentum.

“We need to be able to play better football, for us, it’s a sign we want to improve,” he added.

“The resilience of defending and getting the end result is sometimes very important for the team to understand.

“The spirit is very high and it will be massive in the next game against Newcastle.”

Newcastle will now host third-place Man Utd at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening, with the Premier League match scheduled for an 8:15pm kick-off in the UK.
