Gareth Southgate has been linked to the Manchester United manager role ahead of the summer.

Carrick is certainly going to be in the running to take over as the permanent manager at Old Trafford, as he is doing a really impressive job, but the club hasn’t yet committed to the former Middlesbrough boss, so they could look elsewhere instead.

One name who has been linked is former England boss Gareth Southgate, who has a close relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Southgate has been out of work ever since he left the England job after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain.

Southgate has ‘no passion’ for a PL job right now

Amid the links, and Southgate’s resume of experience with England, he remains one of the favourites to become the next permanent manager at Man United, but speaking last week, he revealed that he currently has no desire to take up a Premier League manager role, hinting that he would turn down the United job.

Southgate appeared on the Football Boardroom Podcast, and suggested that he wouldn’t want a club job with an owner interfering, after having the England role for over six years.

He said: “I’ve got no passion to just go and manage in the Premier League. I did that at 35, I finished 11th, 12th. Who is in those positions now, probably Bournemouth, Brighton?

“So I don’t feel the need to just go and do it to say I’ve managed in the Premier League. I’ve had one of the biggest jobs in world football, so I’ve been spoiled. Huge nights, working with outstanding players. No owner interfering.

“Now we know those big clubs… do I think I could have done the job that some people who have been in those clubs recently have done? Could I do better? I think I could. But we’ve talked about the baggage that comes with me as an appointment if you’re an owner. And there’s a reality around that, I can understand what that noise is. There’s that bit which makes me potentially a complicated appointment for a club.”

Carrick has ‘real chance’ to become United boss

Amid his performance as Man United boss so far, Carrick is the frontrunner to take the job at Old Trafford beyond this season, and it is understood that he is looking more and more likely to be offered the position.

“When Manchester United decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim and give Carrick the opportunity, they expected him to do well – but not at this level.

“Now, internally, there is a feeling that Carrick could really have a chance to become the next permanent manager. It is not decided, but the opportunity is there and he is surprising everyone at the club.”
