Sir Gareth Southgate explains why'brilliant'Man Utd star can't be considered one of Premier League's best ever

Former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate has admitted that he can’t put Manchester United defender Harry Maguire in the top three Premier League centre-backs of all time.

That is despite the admiration that Sir Gareth Southgate holds for England international Harry Maguire, who was a key player for him with the Three Lions.

Maguire built a reputation under Southgate for being one of England’s most reliable players on the international stage during the former Three Lions boss’ reign.

Southgate, who has been linked with Manchester United in the past, has been out of management since he stepped down as England manager after Euro 2024 in Germany.

The 32-year-old Three Lions international has seen the highs and lows during his time at Old Trafford, including losing the club captaincy under Erik ten Hag.

Southgate placed Maguire at No 8 in his blind rankings and the 55-year-old former England manager insisted that the ex-Man Utd captain lacked major silverware.

“Well, Harry was brilliant for me, but I think not [winning] the things that those other players have won, so I’d go eight,” he said.

What does Harry Maguire’s trophy cabinet look like amid Sir Gareth Southgate’s remarks on the Man Utd and England star?

Maguire has lifted the League Cup and the FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford, both of which came under the reign of former United manager Erik ten Hag.

The United and England centre-back also picked up two Europa League runners-up medals to his name after the Red Devils fell short in the 2021 and 2025 finals.

But Maguire has not lifted the Premier League title with United, with the Red Devils finishing second in the table under former club boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

The ex-Hull City and Leicester City player has made 263 appearances for United and has netted 17 times and registered six assists since his 2019 move to Old Trafford.
