Newcastle United striker a doubt v Man Utd as Eddie Howe confirms illness blow - 'positive'…

Newcastle United injuries: Eddie Howe has confirmed a fresh fitness concern ahead of Wednesday’s match against Manchester United.

Newcastle United have one big fitness concern ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United at St James’ Park (8:15pm kick-off).

The Magpies are already without Bruno Guimaraes (hamstring), Fabian Schar (ankle) and Emil Krafth (knee) for the match while Tino Livramento is a major doubt after being out since January with a hamstring injury.

Jacob Ramsey was forced off for Newcastle at half-time after scoring in the 3-2 defeat to Everton at St James’ Park on Saturday but is expected to be back available.

Ramsey was forced off due to illness and head coach Eddie Howe confirmed it’s an issue running through the camp ahead of the Man United match.

Ramsey is expected to be back involved against Man United, but Howe went on to reveal that Nick Woltemade is a doubt for the match.

“Jacob was in yesterday, trained fine, so a quick recovery from him,” Howe said. “There's obviously something, an illness, potentially there in the squad, because Nick Woltemade has gone down ill and we haven't seen him for a couple of days.”

When asked if Woltemade would be back involved, Howe added: “Let's see. We give him every chance.”

The doubts over Woltemade come after a period of increased scrutiny aimed at the German, who has been moved into a deeper role in recent matches.

Jacob Ramsey impact

Ramsey’s withdrawal on Saturday came as a blow for Newcastle as the midfielder has been one of the bright sparks in the side in recent weeks.

“He's getting better and better for me,” Howe admitted. “When we first signed him, I think it was really clear from the training that we were doing how good, technically.

“Jacob very rarely wastes a ball. He's really good in tight areas and he has good athleticism as well, to add to the other side. So I think he's got a little bit of everything and it's been great to see him score a couple of really important goals for us.

“Because I think, naturally, playing in midfield, I think you need to contribute in that area as well.

“So I think that would have done his confidence levels, those two goals, the world of good. I think he now feels fully here and at home and comfortable with what he's being asked to do.

“So I think really positive signs for him that he can only get better from this point as well.”
