Michael Carrick's dream Newcastle admission in 2017 adds extra emotion to Man Utd clash

Manchester United will resume their Premier League campaign with a trip to Newcastle United where Michael Carrick will hope to continue his unbeaten start.

A 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon means Manchester United have now gone 11 games unbeaten and Michael Carrick has picked up six wins in seven matches this season.

Carrick is the frontrunner for the permanent job in the summer, but he still has 10 Premier League games remaining this season to prove himself and secure Champions League football.

Up next for United is a trip to St James’ Park, where United are aiming to do the double over Newcastle. For Carrick, a trip to Tyneside will be extra special.

Michael Carrick is a boyhood Newcastle United fan

Carrick spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player after signing for the Red Devils from Tottenham. Before that, he played for West Ham where he came through their academy.

But Carrick grew up in Wallsend in Tyneside and as a Geordie he has been open about his admiration for Newcastle United football club.

As per The Chronicle, Carrick spoke about his ties to the club back in 2017, including how close he came to joining the Magpies.

“When I was a kid, I was supporting Newcastle. I dreamt one day I would do [play for Newcastle], but I count myself very fortunate to have played for Manchester United for so long.

“It’s just one of those things where you can’t have everything. If and when I finish here (Manchester United), that will probably be it I think.

On whether he had been in contact with Newcastle about a move, Carrick said: “I wouldn’t say it was a definite option, but there was certainly interest there, a discussion or two, but there was nothing really.

“It never got to a stage where a decision had to be made, it was just talks and nothing really happened. It’s just one of them things, life throws up things but it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Man Utd have not done the double over Newcastle in the league since 2020/21

Carrick also scored on three occasions against Newcastle as a player. As a manager, he is yet to come up against the Tyneside outfit, meaning Wednesday will be his first head-to-head clash with Eddie Howe.

United’s recent results away to Newcastle are bleak, with the last victory at St James’ Park coming in 2020/21 .
