Manchester United were dealt fresh injury blows during Sunday’s victory over Crystal Palace

Manchester United are going strong in their quest for European qualification and earnt a sixth win in seven matches on Sunday to send them into third place in the Premier League.

Michael Carrick’s resurgent Red Devils came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 and Benjamin Sesko scored the decisive goal once again, continuing his strong goalscoring streak since the sacking of Ruben Amorim as he continues to grow accustomed to life in England.

United face European rivals Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night, in a match which will provide a stern test despite the inconsistent recent form of their opponents. The Magpies have fallen to 13th place in the table but are strong at home, while they remain just seven points off seventh and still have time to turn their domestic season around.

Man United will be without several players for their encounter in the North East in midweek.

Will Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire be fit to face Newcastle?

Man United were dealt two fresh injury blows on Sunday, as both Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were replaced against Palace to add to a growing list of defensive absentees for the Red Devils.

Shaw has started every Premier League match for the club this season but was withdrawn midway through the first half, soon after coming off worse in a 50/50 challenge with Daniel Munoz. Shaw went down to receive treatment after catching a stud on the top of his left boot and was soon replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.

Maguire, meanwhile, played 85 minutes before he was replaced by Ayden Heaven. Carrick revealed at full-time that both Maguire and Shaw had not been feeling 100 per cent for the match, suggesting it was illness rather than injury which had led to them both being substituted.

Carrick told reporters: “They just weren’t feeling too well, so, hopefully, they will be feeling better soon.”

With that in mind, both Maguire and Shaw are a doubt for the trip to Newcastle on Wednesday night, awaiting further updates on their status by Carrick.

United see list of defensive absentees grow

United now have a worrying list of defensive absentees, which includes Argentine centre-back Lisandro Martinez. He was not named in the matchday squad to face Palace as he continues to recover from a calf injury suffered earlier this month.

Carrick stated that Martinez would miss one or two weeks but did not provide a definitive answer on his return. "We will have to wait and see,” the United head coach explained. “He is close and he is not far away, but it is hard to say at the moment."

Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt has been out with a back injury since November and is yet to return to training. Carrick said: “It’s part of football unfortunately, so we’ll get him back when we can. It's just the nature of the issue really. It’s a difficult one to pin down a timeline. He’s definitely improving, so we're just working towards that really. I can’t give you more at this stage.”

Another player who remains out on the sidelines for the foreseeable future is Patrick Dorgu, who had hit fine form playing further forward under Carrick before he was struck down with a hamstring injury during victory at Arsenal. Reporting stated that he would be out for ten weeks, while his Denmark national team head coach Brian Reimer suggested that Dorgu might be available for selection during the international break later in March.

Midfielder Mason Mount has been out since the Manchester Derby with an injury picked up subsequently in training, with Carrick revealing this week that he has returned to training and is close to action.

“Mason is getting closer,” Carrick said ahead of the Crystal Palace match. “He’s on the grass and looking at being around it pretty soon. We’re just having to be patient, so we’re looking after him and making sure he’s ready for a big finish to the season.”

Similarly to Martinez, this midweek against Newcastle may come too soon for him, but he will hope to return next weekend against Aston Villa on March 15.
