Manchester United boss Michael Carrick will give Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw more time to prove their fitness to face Newcastle on Wednesday, after both were forced off in the win against Crystal Palace with illness.

Shaw was replaced midway through the first half by Noussiar Mazraoui, while Maguire came off the second period and was replaced by Ayden Heaven. Neither defender had picked up an injury, with Carrick confirming both were ill.

He is now hoping they will be well enough to keep their place in the starting XI against Newcastle United at St James' Park, with both part of the travelling squad to Tyneside on Tuesday afternoon.

"We're hoping so. We're working towards it," Carrick said when asked if Shaw and Maguire would be available. "They weren't feeling too good, so we've still got a bit of time to the game and we'll just have to see how they feel. We'll obviously give them every chance.

"It wasn't an injury. Both of them weren't feeling too good. It's one of them things really, but we'll just have to see how they are today and tomorrow morning."

United could be without Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount at Newcastle, with neither yet back in full training. Martinez has missed the last two games with a calf injury, while Mount has been absent for five matches with an injury he picked up in training.

Matthijs de Ligt hasn't played for United since the end of November as he continues to manage a back injury.
