Michael Carrick now provides injury updates on key Man Utd duo ahead of Newcastle match

Michael Carrick has refused to rule out the possibility that Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw could make their respective returns for Manchester United in the Newcastle match.

Luke Shaw started Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon and the 30-year-old England international was subbed off in the first half.

Michael Carrick took Shaw off in the 24th minute and replaced the Red Devils full-back with Noussair Mazraoui in United’s comeback victory against Crystal Palace.

Harry Maguire, much like England teammate Shaw, was subbed off at the weekend, but the 32-year-old former Man Utd captain made way in the 85th minute instead.

No major updates from Michael Carrick on Mason Mount or Matthijs de Ligt ahead of Man Utd’s clash with Newcastle

Mason Mount has not featured in the last five Premier League matches for the Red Devils under Michael Carrick since he suffered a knock in late January.

The 27-year-old United No 7’s last appearance came in Carrick’s first match in charge as interim head coach against Manchester City at Old Trafford in January.

Mount has made 19 appearances across all competitions in another injury-hit United season and has scored three times and registered one assist for his side so far.

Matthijs de Ligt has not featured under Carrick since the United interim boss replaced former Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim in the short term.

The 26-year-old Man Utd centre-back has missed the Red Devils’ last 16 matches across all competitions and has not played for his side since last November.

Matthijs de Ligt has been out of action with a lower back injury since his performance in United’s 2-1 away Premier League win over Crystal Palace in 2025.
