Newcastle United v Manchester United: Injury news affecting Michael Carrick’s side with the latest on Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw ahead of Premier League clash.

Manchester United travel to St James’ Park in good form under their new interim manager and have won back-to-back league matches heading into their clash with the Magpies. Having won in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, Manchester United know that a win this week would also see them complete a Premier League double over Newcastle United for the first time since the 2020/21 season.

Heading into Wednesday night’s game, the visitors have a couple of fitness concerns to deal with. Most of their concerns surround the duo of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, both of whom were substituted during their win over Palace at the weekend.

Shaw was withdrawn in the first-half,whilst Maguire was replaced towards the end of the match. Carrick revealed in the immediate aftermath of that victory that both players had been suffering with illness and that their ability to participate at St James’ Park was unknown.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Carrick reiterated that stance, saying: “We are hoping [to have them available].

“We are working towards it. They weren't feeling well. We will give them every chance. It wasn't an injury, both weren't feeling too good.”

Elsewhere, Carrick has also revealed that Lisandro Martinez will miss out. The defender didn’t feature at all on Sunday and will not make the trip to the north east . “Licha is still out,” Carrick confirmd. “He’s not ready just yet but he’s making good progress."

Manchester United will certainly be without Mathijs De Ligt and Mason Mount on Wednesday night as well as Patrick Dorgu. Dorgu netted the winner for the Red Devils at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture - a match that marked Ruben Amorim’s final victory during his time as Manchester United manager.

On Tyneside, meanwhile, the Magpies will be sweating on the fitness of a couple of key players heading into Wednesday night’s game. Jacob Ramsey is one of those that they will be desperate to see start against the Red Devils.

The former Aston Villa man was easily their best player during the first-half of their defeat against Everton on Saturday afternoon. However, illness forced Ramsey off the pitch before the second half could get underway.

Howe has confirmed that Ramsey may feature against Manchester United, but also revealed that Nick Woltemade hasn’t trained with the group this week after also being struck by illness. The German international has been the centre of much talk in recent weeks amid Newcastle United’s slump in form in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, long-term absentees Fabian Schar, Bruno Guimaraes and Emil Krafth all remain out, whilst Lewis Miley remains sidelined with a leg injury. Howe did confirm, though, that Tino Livramento is making good progress on his return from a hamstring injury and could be a consideration on Wednesday.

Kick-off at St James’ Park is scheduled for 8:15pm and the game will be shown live on TNT Sports in the United Kingdom.
