Newcastle United lost out to Manchester United in the race to sign Benjamin Sesko.
Benjamin Sesko cited “the history” and “future” of Manchester United as the reason for snubbing Newcastle United last summer.
A hectic transfer window resulted in the Magpies facing several rejections for top targets. While star striker Alexander Isak downed tools, Toon chiefs desperately searched for two potential replacements.
Ultimately, Newcastle settled on Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa - a decision that has delivered mixed results so far. But that was not before trying to sign Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro and Man United striker Sesko.
What Benjamin Sesko said after joining Manchester United
Newcastle were locked in a tug of war over Sesko, who played for RB Leipzig at the time. The Slovenian chose an Old Trafford switch but is preparing to play at St James’ Park for the first time.
He is also in fine form, having rediscovered his touch under interim boss Michael Carrick. Sesko has scored in Man United’s previous three fixtures to begin justifying his £70million price tag.
"The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future," Sesko said after joining the Red Devils last summer. “When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.
“From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions. I cannot wait to start learning and connecting with my teammates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together.”
Eddie Howe on Manchester United recruitment
Speaking earlier today, Eddie Howe praised Man United’s summer recruitment and hinted he “was aware” of some targets. He told reporters: "Manchester United have recruited very well. The players you have mentioned are outstanding players - players we were aware of in the summer - so well done to them.
"I'm really happy with the new players we have got. Of course, they're all on different journeys to reach their best level. I believe they will get there."
