Forget Bruno Guimaraes, Man Utd can scout perfect Luke Shaw replacement vs Newcastle

Manchester United have been linked with Newcastle United midfielders ahead of 2026 but the Red Devils should also have their eye on Lewis Hall.

In the latest summer transfer window, Manchester United stung Newcastle by beating them to the signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

On Wednesday afternoon, Michael Carrick will face his boyhood club when United travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle.

It is a good chance for United to get a close-up look at transfer targets Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes ahead of the expected midfield rebuild in the summer.

United have been linked with Tonali, Gordon, Thiaw, Hall and GuimarĂŁes. But which makes most sense?

Man Utd should have their sights on Lewis Hall

Newcastle currently sit down in 13th in the Premier League table so are essentially ruled out of the race for Champions League qualification. With no European football, a fire sale could take place on Tyneside.

United’s £100m links to Tonali make sense, while Casemiro has recommended Guimaraes as his replacement at Old Trafford. All eyes will be on the midfield battle on Wednesday, but perhaps there should be more attention on left-back Lewis Hall.

Luke Shaw only has 18 months remaining on his contract, and United will need to eventually find a long-term replacement for the 30-year-old.

There is no one on the market who is a better fit than 21-year-old Hall, who has quickly become one of Newcastle’s best players since making his move from Chelsea.

Howe has been piling praise onto Hall and even called him a “shining light” in the Newcastle squad last season.

Lewis Hall is competing with Luke Shaw for England spot

Many will consider Shaw as England’s best left-back and a strong favourite to go with the Three Lions for the 2026 World Cup.

But one of his biggest competitors is Hall, who has been stringing together some strong performances for the Magpies this season.

United signed Shaw back in 2014 as one of England’s most promising defenders and he has gone on to become the longest-serving member of the current squad.

There are many parallels between Shaw and Hall – unfortunately including a patchy injury record – but in terms of adding quality to United’s squad, there are few left-backs on the market who would improve United’s XI quite like Hall.
