Red Devils legend Paul Scholes has opened up and told Manchester United to make a move for the perfect manager to come in and take over from interim boss Michael Carrick at the end of the season.
The former United midfielder, speaking during a recent media appearance, suggested the club need proven experience and authority in the dugout if they are to return to competing for major honours. With uncertainty continuing to surround the managerial situation at Old Trafford, Scholes believes Ancelotti’s pedigree at the highest level makes him an ideal candidate.
Scholes argued that United’s recent struggles stem partly from a lack of elite-level leadership, pointing to Ancelotti’s glittering résumé, which includes league titles in multiple countries and Champions League triumphs.
Ancelotti, who most recently managed Real Madrid, has long been regarded as one of football’s most accomplished tacticians. His calm demeanour and ability to manage high-profile dressing rooms have seen him succeed in Italy, England, France, Germany and Spain. Scholes believes that blend of experience and adaptability is exactly what United require after a turbulent period of transition.
Michael Carrick, currently overseeing first-team affairs, has received praise for steadying performances in recent weeks, but questions remain over whether he represents a long-term solution.
Scholes suggested that while Carrick has strong ties to the club and a deep understanding of its culture, the scale of Manchester United’s ambitions demands a manager with a proven record of delivering silverware at the very highest level, Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football Podcast, he stated: “The perfect one out there – I say perfect – Ancelotti is still out there. I know he is coach of Brazil.”
“He is the perfect one for Manchester United where you think he will make players feel a million dollars. And he has the experience of winning stuff.”
“But the question is, is he too old now? That’s the only thing. Is there anyone else of that ilk, with more experience? They need presence as a leader.”
The prospect of Ancelotti returning to the Premier League would undoubtedly excite supporters. His previous spell in England demonstrated his ability to adapt to the league’s intensity, and his tactical flexibility could help maximise the potential within Manchester United’s current squad.
However, any move would depend on Ancelotti’s own ambitions and the club’s willingness to make a decisive approach. if Manchester United want to re-establish themselves among Europe’s elite, appointing a manager of Ancelotti’s calibre would be a statement of serious intent.
