Wayne Rooney thinks there's a‘simple’ explanation for Michael Carrick’s brilliant start at Man Utd

Wayne Rooney has given his verdict on the transformation Manchester United have experienced since Michael Carrick returned as head coach.

Since the turn of the year, Manchester United have enjoyed better results, climbing into the Premier League’s top four to strengthen their grip on Champions League qualification.

Carrick’s record since January is six wins and one draw from seven games.

With every win, belief grows that Carrick could remain United’s head coach beyond this season; all he needs to do is continue winning football matches. A dream could become reality for the 44-year-old coach.

Tell us your reasons why Michael Carrick should be permanent head coach!

Wayne Rooney credits Michael Carrick after ‘great’ start at Man Utd

Carrick has done a remarkable job to date because there was a time – during the festive period – when United wasted multiple opportunities to move into the top four.

With United in third place, Carrick is refusing to rule out a late title charge, but that would take a huge collapse from title challengers Arsenal and Man City in the remaining fixtures.

Appearing on talkSPORT, former United striker Wayne Rooney was asked what has made Carrick have such a big and quick impact since returning to Old Trafford.

“Just simplicity, I think, Rooney said.

“You know, we get told how great all these young coaches are, and I’ve worked with some of them and a lot of it is very complicated. I know the game very well and sometimes you can over complicate the game.

“I think what Michael’s done is gone in and simplified what Man United were doing and he’s simplified that and given players a clear message of what the role is. I’m sure there’s been a demand of you have to run, you have to work, you have to tackle.

“It sounds simple with the basics of football. And that’s what he’s done. The players have certainly took to that and had a great start.”

After Liverpool suffered a 2-1 defeat to Wolves on Tuesday night, United can move six points clear of the reigning champions with a win over Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

Wayne Rooney and Edwin van der Sar join Soccer Aid 2026

Rooney and fellow former United star Edwin van der Sar will be among the football legends in action when Soccer Aid 2026 takes place on May 31.

The Unicef fundraiser will be held at West Ham’s London Stadium, which has Rooney excited.

“I can’t wait for this year’s Soccer Aid for Unicef and to pull on the England shirt one more time for the 20th anniversary.

“It’s England against World XI at the London Stadium on May 31 and this year we want nothing less than an England win.

“Me, Coleen and the boys love the atmosphere and the brilliant family occasion that Soccer Aid for Unicef always is.

“The kids enjoy seeing football legends alongside their favourite celebrities and influencers on the same pitch.

“Last year, Coleen travelled to Poland with Unicef and saw first-hand how the money raised is supporting children with disabilities who fled the war in Ukraine, so they can continue their education and simply be kids once again.

“So please buy a ticket and support this amazing cause, which changes children’s lives around the world.”
