Manchester United will be without Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount for the trip to Newcastle tonight. Michael Carrick has been without Martinez since the clash with Everton after he picked up a minor calf issue in training. Meanwhile, Mount has been out with a knock since the Fulham game and has played just once for Carrick. Ahead of the clash at St James' Park, there was optimism either or both men could return to the squad. However, in an interview with MUTV, Carrick confirmed the duo would not be travelling to the north east. "Not particularly, really, no," Carrick replied when asked if there was an update on Martinez.

"He won’t be with us. He’s not quite ready for that. We’ve got one or two we’re trying to work to get them back – Mason as well, he’s getting a bit closer, so unfortunately it’s part of the game."

Newcastle United's St James' Park

Good afternoon and welcome to the United matchday blog. Spirits are high after another victory on Sunday at home to Crystal Palace. Carrick's side needed to dig deep having gone behind early on, but their persistence finally told. That win, coupled with a defeat for Aston Villa, means United sit third heading into the clash with Newcastle. Eddie Howe's side have struggled to manage their intense schedule but will still prove tough opposition tonight.

United have a host of injury concerns heading into this one. Martinez and Mount have been ruled out while De Ligt and Dorgu are not expected to feature. Maguire and Shaw are doubts due to illness so Heaven could be recalled to the starting XI.

Carrick refused to rule out a late push for the title in his pre-match press conference and if United are going to keep that faint possibility alive, they need to win tonight.

Stay tuned for updates...
