Newcastle United latest news: Jacob Ramsey was sent off against Manchester United at St James’ Park.
The hosts, aiming to respond from their disappointing 3-2 defeat at home to Everton at the weekend, started the brightest with a number of shots at goal - although none of those tested Senne Lammens in the Red Devils net. Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga and Joelinton were all guilty of spurning good openings as they searched for a deadlock breaker.
In truth, Michael Carrick’s side barely tested Aaron Ramsdale in the Magpies goal before Casemiro netted an equaliser in the ninth minute of added time at the end of the first-half. Three had been signalled by fourth official Tim Robinson.
It was a first-half that Eddie Howe’s side dominated for large parts, but one that ended with them a man down after Jacob Ramsey was shown a second yellow card by referee Peter Bankes. Bankes, the man on VAR in December who was at the centre of an official complaint by the Magpies after failing to intervene to award them a penalty after a clear foul by Trevoh Chalobah on Anthony Gordon, seemed reluctant to reach into his pocket following Ramsey’s slip in the box, but did so after being surrounded by the Red Devils players.
Ramsey was subsequently given his marching orders, although replays of the incident released by TNT Sports seemed to show that the Magpies man hadn’t dived in seeking a penalty, but instead lost his footing in the box as he stepped over the goalkeeper.
VAR, though, couldn’t intervene in the Ramsey red card as it is not allowed to step in on yellow card offences. Unsurprisingly, Bankes and his team were booed off the St James’ Park pitch as they headed down the tunnel for the half-time break.
Chaotic end to Newcastle United v Man Utd first-half
Ramsey’s red card had added a level of spice to what was, until that point, a fairly entertaining encounter on Tyneside. The Magpies, fuelled by their perceived injustice at Ramsey’s dismissal, initially reacted very well to going a man down and took the lead when Gordon slammed home a penalty.
Bruno Fernandes was the man guilty of committing the offence in the box, although he didn’t receive a booking for taking out the winger. Gordon then tucked home from the spot to nudge his side into a deserved lead.

It looked like that would be how the half ended, with the Magpies on top. However, in the ninth minute of three added on, Casemiro nodded home from a free-kick to tie the game once more.
Having twice conceded just minutes after scoring at the weekend, it was a real sense of deja vu for the hosts.
