Jacob Ramsey was sent off for Newcastle United against Manchester United for diving in stoppage time of the first-half.

The Magpies midfielder was shown a second yellow card when he went down inside the box after pushing the ball past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Lammens came rushing off his goal line and Ramsey got a decisive touch around him.

The former player went to ground, and referee Peter Bankes adjudged the 24-year-old to have feigned contact with Lammens. He showed Ramsey a second yellow card in what was a hugely controversial moment in the clash.

Ally McCoist said on co-commentary on TNT Sports: "It's an interesting one. Initially, when he goes down, I wasn't sure he was looking for it.

"He knocks the ball by him, I'm not sure it's a real effort to con the referee, to be honest with you. I know he goes to ground, but there's no way he's giving a penalty.

"Is he just trying to get out of the road? Is he off-balance? That's a really interesting one. Does he touch him there, and it just knocks him off balance a little bit?"

While former goalkeeper Shay Given said: "I think it's extremely harsh." Owen Hargreaves, the ex-Manchester United midfielder, also questioned the decision.

Hargreaves said: "I think because he doesn't go down when the keeper is out, he takes a step, takes a second and then just collapses. I think that's what they've seen, but I think it's harsh as well."

Ramsey was first booked for pulling back Casemiro. "Why's he getting booked so early?" said Given at the time. "It's a needless foul on the halfway line, there's no danger, so I think that's an easy decision."

Not long after Ramsey was sent off, Newcastle were awarded a penalty when Anthony Gordon was brought down by . Fernandes tripped Gordon inside the box and the England winger converted from 12 yards.

Given said: "This is a much easier decision for Peter Bankes, he took his time but you seen Sandro Tonali was adamant and then he's convinced himself. Bruno Fernandes was pleading innocence but I think he'll see from the replay it was a clear penalty, knee on knee, it's a penalty for me."

Hargreaves agreed, adding: "Yeah. It's a penalty." Casemiro then equalised for United to end a crazy spell of first-half stoppage time.

Bankes was subjected to fierce boos at half-time at St James' Park, with the home crowd furious at the sending off. The referee was also jeered as he came back onto the pitch for the second half.
