Manchester United player ratings vs Newcastle: Five 5/10s and 'unfortunate' 4/10 in dire…

Manchester United produced a dire performance as they were defeated 2-1 by the 10-men of Newcastle in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Michael Carrick made one change to his line up with Noussair Mazraoui selected in place of Diogo Dalot. Newcastle went close early on when a Kieran Trippier cross hit the post, while Bryan Mbeumo blazed a glorious opportunity over the bar at the other end.

Newcastle were reduced to 10-men when Jacob Ramsey was shown a second yellow card for a dive in the box, but they took the lead just before half-time when Anthony Gordon scored a penalty after he was fouled by Bruno Fernandes. It didn't last long as Casemiro headed the visitors level deep into stoppage time.

Gordon wasted a golden opportunity from a corner in what was a low-quality second-half performance, before Newcastle grabbed an improbable win as Will Osula scored a spectacular solo goal from the bench.

It meant Carrick finally tasted defeat as United head coach and here is how we rated the United players at St. James' Park:

Confident claiming crosses into his box. Frustrated the home crowd with his game management during restarts. No chance with either goal.

1. Senne Lammens - 6.5

Found it difficult at times. A poor clearance gifted Tonali a decent opportunity, and his passing was a little too safe after that. The penalty came down his flank. Booked for a foul.

2. Noussair Mazraoui - 5

Almost punished when he allowed Trippier's cross to hit the post. Defended pretty well otherwise and made an important tackle in his box. Saw a fine header saved by Ramsdale.

3. Leny Yoro - 6

A strong defensive showing. He dealt with everything that came his way and offered important physicality against a resilient Newcastle side.

4. Harry Maguire - 6.5
