Newcastle United latest news: Will Osula’s stunning late strike secured a 3-2 win for Newcastle United v Man Utd.

Osula came on as a late substitute alongside Jacob Murphy as a final roll of the dice from Eddie Howe as they looked for a famous win on Tyneside. The Magpies had been reduced to ten men in the first-half after Jacob Ramsey was harshly dismissed by referee Peter Bankes for a second yellow card.

They reacted well to that red card, though, and took the lead just minutes later through Anthony Gordon’s penalty. Gordon was fouled by Bruno Fernandes before picking himself up and smashing home beyond Senne Lammens.

They wouldn’t go into the break ahead, though, as Casemiro nodded in from close range in the ninth minute of three added on at the end of the first-half. The Brazilian’s goal restored parity in a match that the hosts had, until that point, largely dominated.

Despite being a man down for the whole of the second half, the hosts continued to enjoy the better of the play and were matching their full strength opponents blow for blow. It looked like the game would end with both teams sharing a point, before Osula stepped up to blow the roof off St James’ Park.

Having won the ball back in his own half, Osula then latched onto a brilliant pass from Kieran Trippier before cutting in on his left foot and curling a delicious effort past Lammens who could do nothing but watch the ball ripple the Gallowgate net.

As the ball slammed into the back of the net, St James’ Park exploded with the vast majority inside the famous old stadium blown away by the goal. Described as a ‘goal worthy of winning any game’ by Paul Robinson on BBC Radio Five Live, it was as brilliant as it was surprising.

Although, it wasn’t surprising for the goalscorer who told Match of the Day that he had practised that exact move in training: “I was training that yesterday in the training drill,” Osula revealed. “I only had one thing on my mind, thank God it went in. I know I can take the players on and have end product.

“It was testing my pace a bit that ball in behind but I got there and happy with my end product. I was doing it yesterday and I was pretty consistent. It's true that habit pays off.

“It's so loud in this stadium, St James' Park. It's the best fanbase in the world. It's top.”

Speaking to TNT Sports, he added: “That was the best feeling ever. I was so happy for that. When I came on I just prayed that I was going to score and make something happen and thank God that that happened. I was practicing that in training yesterday, just cut in and finish it, so the hard work paid off.”
