Michael Carrick's midfield instincts kicked in with 70th-minute Man Utd command vs Newcastle and it spoke volumes

Michael Carrick showed that he had not lost his touch with his midfield insight after how Manchester United performed on the ball against Newcastle in the second half.

The 44-year-old Manchester United legend watched on from the dugout at St James’ Park amid the Red Devils’ challenging encounter with the Magpies on Wednesday.

Man Utd and Newcastle went into half-time with the scoreline level at 1-1 apiece, but Eddie Howe’s men were reduced to 10 men in the first half of the clash.

Jacob Ramsey was dismissed for a second bookable offence and Carrick was visibly frustrated in the second half with United’s struggles to break down Newcastle.

Michael Carrick might not be a Man Utd midfielder anymore, but he could see the Red Devils’ struggle in moving the ball around

Despite Casemiro cancelling out Anthony Gordon’s first-half opener, Manchester United were unable to capitalise on their advantage over 10-man Newcastle.

Eddie Howe’s side fended off the Red Devils from taking the lead at St James’ Park and United’s tempo on the ball left much to be desired, even for Michael Carrick.

As reported by TNT Sports in the 70th minute of Wednesday’s clash, Man Utd interim boss Carrick demanded urgency from his side to move the ball quickly.

BBC Sport added that Carrick was spotted on the touchline ‘urging’ the Red Devils players to ‘move the ball quicker’ amid Newcastle’s resilience against United.

However, the publication added that the Red Devils legend’s message hadn’t ‘been picked up,’ with United failing to put the Magpies under pressure at the time.

Man Utd players failed to follow Michael Carrick’s tactical demand and it came back to haunt them against Newcastle

Carrick’s fairy-tale United run experienced its first major curveball after the Red Devils fell to a 2-1 defeat to 10-man Newcastle at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Newcastle pushed back against United in the second half and Howe’s men snatched all three Premier League points in the dying stages of the encounter.

William Osula broke the 1-1 deadlock for the Magpies in the 90th minute after producing a stunning curling finish into the far corner of Senne Lammens’ net.

Carrick tasted his first loss as interim boss after notching up six Premier League wins from his first seven matches in the Old Trafford dugout since January.
