Man Utd fell to a 2-1 defeat vs Newcastle United in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Michael Carrick has urged Manchester United to 'learn lessons' from their dismal defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

United wasted a golden opportunity to strengthen their hopes of Champions League qualification when they lost to a Newcastle side that played with 10-men since the final stages of the first half. Jacob Ramsey was shown a second yellow card when he was alleged to have dived in the box, but it didn't stop Newcastle from taking a lead when Anthony Gordon converted a penalty.

It looked like the match would swing in United's favour when Casemiro headed in an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, but they were unable to build upon that momentum after the restart. The Reds rarely troubled the Newcastle goal and paid the ultimate price when Will Osula scored a spectacular solo goal in the final minutes of the match.

Carrick sends message in Champions League hunt

Manchester United now face an 11-day break before they return to action against Aston Villa in the Premier League, in what will be another huge test in the race for Champions League qualification. Michael Carrick's side remain third in the league table after Villa were thumped by Chelsea earlier in the night, with a top-five finish likely to be enough for a place in the top continental club competition.

United have nine matches left to secure a place in the Champions League next season, and Carrick hopes his side will use their lengthy break between games to bounce back with a win next week.

"We’ve got to make the best out of it, make it a help really," Carrick said in his post-match press conference. "As I said about learning lessons, understanding why tonight was what it was, how it happened, and developed. We’ve gotta learn from that. It’s another big game, we’re in a position where that can be really exciting, so we need to be really positive going into the game."

Asked what went wrong after the break on Wednesday night, the United head coach added: "It’s football, it happens in the game. There are certain things we have to do. We can be an awful lot better; we’ve put ourselves in a decent position with the performances and results we’ve had. Tonight hurts."
