Michael Carrick makes promise after first defeat in charge of Man Utd against 10-man Newcastle

Manchester United fell to their first-ever defeat under Michael Carrick against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night.

After a trip to Tyneside on Wednesday night, Manchester United lost 2-1 against Newcastle.

There was plenty of drama towards the end of the first half as Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card for simulation, Anthony Gordon opened the scoring, and Casemiro equalised.

A late goal from William Osula sealed the win for Newcastle as Michael Carrick’s unbeaten run as United head coach came to a crashing end.

Michael Carrick ‘bitterly disappointed’ as Newcastle beat Man Utd

It was clear by Carrick’s body language on the touchline at St James’ Park that he wasn’t happy.

The performance – for the fourth game running – was below par, and there won’t be many United fans who think the Red Devils deserved more from the game after failing to take advantage of the fact that Newcastle were down to 10 men.

To Newcastle’s credit, it didn’t look like they had one man less than Carrick’s side on the pitch. A poor first-half performance carried on after the break.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Carrick admitted he was ‘bitterly disappointed’ but promised that United would improve next time out.

“We are not happy the way we played tonight,” Carrick said.

“The way the game panned out we had it in our hands largely but credit to Newcastle and the way they approached it. We knew it would be tough, but we navigated the game to a position where we could kick on but we didn’t. Bitterly disappointed really.

“I don’t think it was the 10 men, we just didn’t play good enough. We can’t make excuses for that. We all take responsibility for that.

“It was just the quality of the performance, it wasn’t character or wanting to win, it’s easy to throw that just because you don’t win a game of football.

“Newcastle deserved to win tonight, it hurts me to say that. That is how it was. We need to get back to work and be better for the next game.

“We’ve lost one game, we haven’t played well enough but in the grand scheme of things we are in a decent position. Tonight hurts but we will be better for the next one.

“You have to get back at it, work hard and do the things we did to win the games we’ve won. We can do that, we are a good team, tonight wasn’t for us.

“We have to learn from it and get better for it. We had a lot of praise lately and the boys deserve it, this doesn’t change how we approach the next game. We’ve got everything to play for.”

Eddie Howe questions Jacob Ramsey’s sending off vs Man Utd

Ramsey was sent off for Newcastle for diving against United after Senne Lammens came off his line in the first half.

The 24-year-old raced into United’s box following a pass from Gordon.

A heavy first touch led to Ramsey throwing himself to the ground, but he was already on a yellow card, which left Peter Bankes with no other choice but to send him off because there was no contact with Lammens.

In his post-match interview, Newcastle boss Howe stressed that he thought the decision was harsh.

“The main emotion was trying to work out how we’d play in that second half,” Howe told TNT Sports.

“We wanted to regroup. I thought Jacob Ramsey’s sending off was really harsh. I don’t think he’s looking for a penalty there.”
