Two winners and four losers as Man Utd lose 2-1 against Newcastle

Manchester United’s unbeaten run in the Premier League since the beginning of 2026 came to an end on Wednesday night.

Michael Carrick experienced his first defeat since becoming Manchester United’s head coach.

Manchester United lost 2-1 against Newcastle, but still sit in third place in the Premier League due to results elsewhere.

Newcastle opened the scoring through an Anthony Gordon penalty in the first half, shortly after Jacob Ramsay’s red card, but Casemiro equalised before the half-time whistle. William Osula scored a late winner to secure three points for Eddie Howe’s side as he took advantage of United’s sloppy defending.

Winners

Casemiro: A lot of people thought Casemiro was physically done two years ago, but here he proved – yet again – his importance to this United side with an equaliser on the brink of half-time.

Casemiro hardly put a foot wrong in the game before being replaced by Diogo Dalot with 60 minutes on the clock. He made four recoveries and won all of his aerial duels.

It is telling that United have only lost once in their last 25 league games that Casemiro has started.

Bruno Fernandes: Although Bruno Fernandes gave away the penalty for Newcastle’s opener, United’s captain assisted Casemiro from a free-kick.

It was Fernandes’ fourth assist for the Brazil international in the Premier League this season, making it the most frequent assister-scoring combination in the top flight.

As well as the assist for Casemiro, Fernandes created multiple openings for United throughout the game, with Leny Yoro unlucky not to take advantage of that when his header was denied by Aaron Ramsay.

Fernandes now has 14 assists to his name in the Premier League this season.

Losers

Kobbie Mainoo: He forced Ramsay into a decent save, but did very little other than that. It was Kobbie Mainoo’s worst display since returning to the line-up as he never settled into the game.

It was a tough evening for the young midfielder as Joelinton won many of the battles in midfield.

Bryan Mbeumo: There is no denying that Bryan Mbeumo has been United’s star player this season, but he missed a golden opportunity in the first half when he sent his effort on an open goal miles over the bar.

Mbeumo was booked for a foul and offered nothing in attack.

Tyrell Malacia: This may seem harsh, as Tyrell Malacia hasn’t played regular football in a very long time, and he only came off the bench because of Noussair Mazraoui’s injury.

Moments after kicking the ball out of play to kill a United attack, Malacia found himself trying to defend William Osula before the Newcastle attack cut in and sent his effort past Ramsay.

Malacia appeared to have given up as Osula got past him with ease. I don’t think anyone would shed a tear if it were the Dutch full-back’s final appearance for the club, with his contract set to expire in the summer.

Is it fair to blame Tyrell Malacia for Newcastle’s winning goal?

Peter Bankes: The referee made the right call to send off Jacob Ramsey for a second yellow when he went down without there being any contact from Senne Lammens, but there could have been another two Newcastle players sent for an early shower.

Joelinton sarcastically clapped towards Bankes after receiving a yellow card and Dan Burn was extremely lucky for avoiding a straight red card when he elbowed Luke Shaw in the face.
