Eddie How disagreed with the decision to send Jacob Ramsey off against Manchester United on Wednesday night. Ramsey was shown a second yellow card for simulation in the first half.

Ramsey was sent through into the box and went to the ground as Senne Lammens attempted to claim the ball. Peter Bankes awarded United a free-kick and gave Ramsey a second yellow card for diving.

Newcastle won 2-1 despite United having an extra man for the second half of the game. The sending off was still a talking point during Howe's post-match press conference, though.

When asked about the referee's decision, Howe responded: "I don't think Jacob has gone down to simulate or mislead the referee in any way. He's maybe anticipating contact and loses his footing. I think you have to be really careful before changing the game like the referee did."

Lammens disagreed with Howe during his interview with TNT Sports. "I didn’t feel any contact," he said. "I don’t think it was a foul. He was looking for the contact, I was holding myself in, and I think the ref made the right decision."

Howe was also asked whether United vs Newcastle brings the best out of his side. "You're right, historically that's always been the case, it's one of the great fixtures in English football," he said. "The afternoon game against Everton, a 3pm game when the pitch was a bit slippery, it's a more difficult game for us."

United last won at St James’ Park in October 2020 when fans were absent due to the Covid-19 pandemic. You have to go back to January 2019 for the Reds' last win at Newcastle with fans in attendance.
