March 3 – Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been handed a 15-month suspended prison sentence by a Greek Court following a well-publicised incident in Mykonos in August 2020.

Initially, the England international received a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days after being found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees, and insult.

His legal team immediately appealed, which under Greek law nullified the original conviction and triggered a full retrial. What followed was a drawn-out legal process, postponed four times between 2023 and 2025.

The ruling was handed down by a three-member panel of judges sitting on the Aegean island of Syros. The retrial concluded that Maguire was guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery. With the reduced severity of those offences, the sentence was cut to 15 months, suspended.

“Today, the court upheld the conviction and justice was done,” prosecution lawyer Ioannis Paradissis told the Guardian. “Policemen sustained injuries that night. They have not forgotten what happened to them and they are still awaiting an apology. Not once has Maguire shown any remorse.”

Sources have told BBC Sport, however, that Maguire denies wrongdoing and intends to appeal to the Supreme Court. He has also rejected opportunities to settle the matter out of court, insisting he wants to clear his name through the legal system.
