Alan Shearer couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at Manchester United after 10-man Newcastle United claimed a huge victory at St. James's Park. William Osula’s late stunner secured the Magpies a 2-1 victory as Michael Carrick fell to a first defeat as Red Devils boss.
In a crazy game at St. James's Park, Eddie Howe’s side were reduced to 10-men when Jacob Ramsey collected a second booking for an apparent dive. Both Newcastle players and supporters were left furious by the decision, especially after Ramsey’s first booking came about following his first foul of the match in the middle of the pitch.
However, Anthony Gordon still managed to fire his side ahead, although the lead wouldn’t last for long as Casemiro headed the visitors level deep into first-half stoppage time. And just when it looked like the game was heading for a draw, Osula showed incredible fight and skill to score a superb solo winner that sent Newcastle players wild.
And taking to X in the immediate aftermath of his side’s win, Shearer couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at the Red Devils as well, taking aim at the match officials. He wrote: “Great win for the Toon with 10 men and deserved. Not sure who was worse. The Ref or Man Utd. #bothhopeless.”
Reflecting on his side’s win, Magpies boss Howe said: “An amazing night. It was a great performance all the way through. 11 v 11 or 11 v 10. I thought we deserved to win.
"The main emotion was trying to work out how we'd play in that second half. We wanted to regroup. I thought Jacob Ramsey's sending off was really harsh. I don't think he's looking for a penalty there.”
While matchwinner Osula revealed: "I was training that yesterday in the training drill. I only had one thing on my mind, thank God it went in. I know I can take the players on and have end product.
"It was testing my pace a bit that ball in behind, but I got there and happy with my end product.
"I was doing it yesterday and I was pretty consistent. It's true that habit pays off. It's so loud in this stadium, St James' Park. It's the best fanbase in the world. It's top."
