Manchester United and Newcastle United are both in the mix for Borussia Dortmund full-back Julian Ryerson, and Dortmund could put him up for sale this summer.
That’s according to BILD. The German newspaper reports that Ryerson may be sacrificed by the Bundesliga club to help balance the books.
According to their information, Dortmund need to make up around €27m this summer. Failing to move beyond the Champions League play-off phase has left them with a financial hole they need to fill.
To offset this deficit, the club’s management know they need to sell a top player. According to BILD, a decision has now been made.
What needs to happen for Ryerson for sale
Should an interested party pay around €30m for Ryerson, then the 28-year-old will be released. His ‘top performances’ have earned attention from Barcelona, Manchester United and Newcastle United.
He’s on 11 assists this season, giving him ‘elite status’ among the full backs in Europe. Only Luis Diaz and Michael Olise have better assist stats this season. Thus, the Norwegian is in high demand.
BILD say the ‘king of crosses’ can even further increase his market value with Norway at the World Cup this summer. Whether Manchester United or Newcastle want to move before then remains to be seen.
Where things go from here
Julian Ryerson
Lisbon, Portugal – 02 11 2025: Julian Ryerson seen during UEFA Champions League game between teams of Sporting CP and Borussia Dortmund
There’s no indication whether either side would be willing to pay €30m for Ryerson this summer. Given that Dortmund are desperate to sell, the two will presumably want to use that to their advantage.
The player being pushed out looks like a clear attempt to get him on the market, which gives a different dynamic to the situation.
Our take on the situation
There’s potentially a better deal to be negotiated. A squad overhaul is on the cards at Borussia Dortmund this summer. Their Champions League failure has only increased the need for major changes.
The €30m is therefore a starting point, and negotiations could take that amount lower.
Transfermarkt have his value at €20m on a contract lasting until 2028. That’s the highest his value has been, and hit that level in 2024.
Whilst he’s primarily a right-back, Ryerson is also able to play on the left, making him a versatile value signing who could benefit the squad profile at both clubs.
