While Newcastle United celebrated William Osula’s superb last-minute strike to down Manchester United on Wednesday, Eintracht Frankfurt were despairing.
That’s according to Frankfurter Rundschau. The German newspaper cover Osula today and how his goal will have caused disappointment at Frankfurt.
According to their information, the winning goal could have implications for the Bundesliga side and their future transfer plans.
That late goal made a statement and was undoubtedly the ‘absolute highlight’ of the 22-year-old’s career so far. But while Newcastle celebrated their 2-1 victory with euphoria, the goal likely caused disappointment for Frankfurt and their transfer plans.
Frankfurt efforts for transfer
The German side have already made two attempts to bring Osula to the club in the past. Both efforts were in vain. The transfer fell through on each occasion, even though the club and player’s representatives had apparently reached an agreement.
Now this statement goal is likely to have pushed Osula further away. Frankfurt’s once ‘tangible dream’ of signing him is seen as a ‘distant prospect’.
Transfermarkt already valued Osula at €15m but goals like the one against Manchester United usually act as a catalyst. Newcastle United showed zero interest in lowering their demands, particularly in the January transfer window.
Now that Osula is scoring goals like that, the Magpies will likely be even less inclined to offer a discount to potential suitors.
Thus, the train has probably passed for Frankfurt. A deal for Osula was already a challenge even without his potential jump in market value. Now he could be completely out of the question financially.
Analysis: Osula and Newcastle United exit
What happens next with Osula remains to be seen. He’s barely featured for Newcastle United this season following the arrivals of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa in the summer transfer window.
While his appearance against Manchester United was his 24th of the season, he’s only managed 580 minutes in total. That’s after managing just 421 minutes in all competitions last season.
Reports in Germany had made it clear that he wants to leave St James’ Park and was keen on the move to Frankfurt. Indeed, one such report in December stated he expected to leave Newcastle at some point in the near future.
Contract, value and agents
Osula has a Newcastle United contract running until June 2029, and it’s the same contract he signed when he arrived. The Transfermarkt value of €15m is obviously irrelevant to what the Premier League club can demand.
