Ryan Giggs says he played with‘amazing’ midfielder at Man Utd whose career was ruined by injuries

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs is one of the club figures from the Class of ’92 who speaks the least in the press. But now he’s added praise for one player he once called a teammate.

During the Sir Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United, there wasn’t a player with more silverware than Ryan Giggs.

The Welsh winger played 963 times for United over the course of his career, being well placed to judge his teammates from this time.

A bona fide United legend, Giggs has now picked out former teammate Anderson for praise.

Will Ryan Giggs ever be overtaken as English football’s most decorated player?

Ryan Giggs says Anderson could have been amazing if not for injury

United signed Anderson as the world’s golden boy in 2008; however, he never quite reached the levels his potential suggested.

Speaking on the Shoot for Love podcast on YouTube, Giggs was asked about Anderson and what went wrong for him.

“[He was] Amazing. He didn’t speak great English”, Giggs admitted.

“And you get a translator in, and I don’t think even the translator understood him in Portuguese. They’re saying he’s speaking a Portuguese that I’ve never heard before. It’s like street Portuguese.”

Continuing, Giggs explained injuries ultimately ruined the Brazilian’s career.

“But an amazing talent. He just had too many injuries. But on his day, any midfielder would have problems with him.”

Anderson still had a very successful career for Manchester United

While seeing his career derailed by injury, resulting in him not reaching the levels he should have, Anderson still had a career more successful than 99% of footballers.

The Brazilian midfielder won four Premier League titles at United, along with also claiming the 2007/08 Champions League crown in which he played a key role.

Anderson also helped United to one League Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and two FA Community Shields in his time at the club.

There is the old comparison of Anderson having a better career than Steven Gerrard, which might not be completely true, but in spite of his injuries, the Brazilian is in the history books.
