Kobbie Mainoo is starting to face a familiar problem under Carrick, he can’t vindicate Amorim

Kobbie Mainoo and Manchester United’s honeymoon period ended at the same time at the hands of Newcastle at St James’ Park.

While Man Utd lost 2-1 to Newcastle to hand them their first loss under Michael Carrick, Kobbie Mainoo’s sharp run of form also hit a roadblock.

In many ways, the loss to Newcastle was the culmination of steadily declining levels for Man Utd, and the same can be said about Mainoo.

Against Newcastle, he faced a familiar problem. The challenge for him is to solve it now so it doesn’t vindicate Ruben Amorim.

How worried are you about Kobbie Mainoo not yet signing a new contract?

Kobbie Mainoo’s familiar problem at Man Utd

Mainoo, at his best, is a smart operator who thrives in small spaces with his press-resistant dribbling and eye for creating space in midfield.

That is a priceless skill for any team that wants to play with the ball on the ground, but in Mainoo’s case, it comes with a caveat.

Mainoo has a silky gear to his game where he makes it look effortless, but sometimes, that’s the only gear he has.

Therefore, when the occasion calls for taking the game by the scruff of its neck and being a difference-maker, he has a habit of slipping under the radar to become a safe player instead.

Against Newcastle, when Eddie Howe’s side made the game ugly and uncomfortable, Mainoo retreated into his shell and continued to play his cute, simple passes.

That style of play retained possession, but didn’t do much else at a time when United needed their stars to put their hand up and make a difference.

In contrast, Bruno Fernandes was a man possessed, as he created chance after chance, played almost as a centre-back late on to influence the buildup, and didn’t shirk any duels.

Even Casemiro tried to get the ball forward and overload the box when he was on the pitch, but Mainoo’s game remained as it is.

When it’s working, staying unperturbed is a great quality. When it’s not, it can look like a lack of “oomph”.

Ruben Amorim called out Mainoo

The Newcastle version of Mainoo was the player Ruben Amorim saw at all times, which was a meek, sometimes safe player who doesn’t trust his own ability to make a difference.

Of course, that’s far from the truth, as this is the same player who emerged from the wilderness and schooled the two best teams in England right now in consecutive games.

However, that doesn’t mean Amorim’s criticism was entirely unfounded, as the Newcastle version showed.

To avoid vindicating the Portuguese manager, Mainoo needs as much of a mental leap as he does a technical one.

When the game gets intense and ugly, he needs to show the character of wanting the ball and making a difference instead of continuing to play his own little game in a vacuum.

The expectations are high for Mainoo because his talent is limitless, and this is the next step to solve on his route to superstar-dom.
