Jacob Ramsey has laughed off Anthony Gordon's joke about diving after referee Peter Bankes sent off the Newcastle United midfielder against Manchester United, showing him a second yellow card for simulation.

Ramsey, 24, was already on a booking for pulling back Casemiro when he went down one-on-one with Man United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Bankes adjudged that the former England under-21 international was trying to win a penalty and dismissed Ramsey.

Gordon, however, put Newcastle in front minutes later from the penalty spot. Casemiro soon equalised, but Will Osula scored a 90th-minute winner for a much-needed victory at St James' Park.

The opening goalscorer has now posted on Instagram about the match. Gordon shared several photos of himself from the game as well as a video of him scoring the penalty.

However, the caption begins with a diving mask emoji, then tags Ramsey's verified account. The summer signing commented on Gordon's post with four face-tears-of-joy emojis. Ramsey also responded to Osula's post that read: "Romans 8:18 Thank you Jesus Christ". He commented with four red heart emojis.

Eddie Howe defended his player after the match, saying: "I don't think Jacob has gone down to simulate or mislead the referee in any way. He's maybe anticipating contact and loses his footing. I think you have to be really careful before changing the game like the referee did."

Lammens, though, disagreed, telling TNT Sports: "I didn't feel any contact. I don't think it was a foul. He was looking for the contact, I was holding myself in, and I think the ref made the right decision."

The decision also split former referees. The former Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) general manager, Keith Hackett, spoke to Football Insider about the sending off.

He said: "I do not believe that the Newcastle United player has attempted to deceive the referee to win a penalty kick. I look for exaggeration, and when the player hits the ground, the player immediately turns to the referee, making an appeal.

"In this situation, there is no contact by the goalkeeper, so the decision not to award a penalty kick is the correct decision. However, the attacker is off balance and goes to ground.

"In my opinion, his actions do not fulfil the criteria for an act of simulation, so he is very unfortunate to receive a yellow card followed by the red. Referee Peter Bankes has got this one wrong, making the judgment that the players' act was simulation."

Dermot Gallagher, however, backed Bankes on Sky Sports' Ref Watch. The former Premier League official said: "Does he have to do that? Is he caught? No. He goes down so far after the incident has happened, and I don't think he needs to.

"I would also suggest that if he hadn't got a yellow card for that, people would be screaming and saying we don't want diving, so Peter Bankes has taken positive action, so back him."
