'He's digging him out': Gary Lineker reacts after seeing Man Utd icon's criticism of Michael Carrick after Newcastle loss

Gary Lineker has insisted that it is “odd” to see how Paul Scholes has been behaving towards Michael Carrick after Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle.

Michael Carrick experienced his first loss as Manchester United interim head coach after the ex-Middlesbrough boss’ appointment to the role at Old Trafford in January.

The 44-year-old United legend watched on from the St James’ Park dugout as William Osula netted a stunning late strike against the Red Devils on Wednesday.

Man Utd’s loss to Newcastle in their Premier League clash opened the door for Paul Scholes to take a swipe at Carrick after the Red Devils’ momentum took a knock.

Paul Scholes took to social media and the 51-year-old former Manchester United and England midfielder pulled no punches towards ex-teammate Michael Carrick.

Posting on social media after Man Utd’s defeat to 10-man Newcastle, Scholes was deeply criticised with how the Red Devils have performed in recent weeks.

“Michael has definitely got something special about him… because United have been c— [in] the last four games,” he shared.

Carrick has been met with criticism from former United players outside of Scholes as well, with Red Devils legend Roy Keane another staunch critic of the interim boss.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, co-host Gary Lineker said: “You see, there’s a little bit of beef between Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick?

“He’s digging him out, isn’t he? He’s not exactly being very supportive of his old teammate, is he?”

Gary Lineker’s verdict on Paul Scholes after the former Man Utd midfielder’s remarks about Michael Carrick

Carrick had won six of his seven Premier League matches as interim head coach before his eighth fixture ended in his first defeat since his return to the club.

Lineker made his feelings clear on the ‘feud’ that Scholes holds with Carrick and suggested that there might be a “bit of history” that explains the rivalry between them.

“It’s an odd one,” he added.

“It’s weird, isn’t it? Maybe there’s a bit of history there. Who knows?”

United remain third in the Premier League table after their defeat to Newcastle and the Red Devils will return to action against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 15th March.
