Why Man Utd legend turned down Donald Trump meeting at the White House with Inter Miami

Inter Miami celebrated their 2025 MLS Cup success with a visit to the White House. The ceremony in Washington, DC, marked the first time Lionel Messi met with US President Donald Trump, but David Beckham was notably absent.

The greatest player of all time received some criticism for his reaction to Trump speaking about the United States vs Iran war, while also going viral following the President mentioning long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo. It's the first time Messi has attended the White House, after turning down an invitation from Joe Biden in 2025.

However, the most well-known co-owner of the MLS club, Beckham, was nowhere to be seen. That's because the England legend didn't turn up to the coveted event.

Where David Beckham Really Was During Trump Meeting

The Manchester United icon, who owns Inter Miami alongside brothers Jorge and Jose Mas, was a notable absentee, whereas Messi, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul could all be seen in the background of Trump's speech. There's a simple explanation behind Beckham's no-show.

Instead of travelling to the United States of America for the appearance, Beckham instead opted to stay in Europe. A White House source told CNN that the 50-year-old chose to remain in Europe to support his family, specifically attending Victoria Beckham's fashion show.

So it was a scheduling issue that prevented Trump from meeting Beckham, rather than a personal rejection. It is reported that he wanted to lead the club to the White House, but put Victoria's personal milestone ahead of the Trump meeting.

With the incredible rise to prominence of Inter Miami since being founded in 2018, it may not be Beckham's last chance to attend an evening with the US President. In their short history, the club have already scooped the MLS Cup, Leagues Cup and Supporters' Shield, as well as featuring in the FIFA Club World Cup.

While he missed out on the chance to meet the current President, Beckham was present when Barack Obama hosted LA Galaxy in 2012 after their MLS title win. In fact, the Englishman was even the source of a couple of jokes for the then-American leader.

Obama quipped: "He is tough. In fact, it is a rare man who can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear. David Beckham is that man."

Barack Obama and Donald Trump don't often see eye-to-eye in the world of politics, and they can't agree on football's greatest player ever.

He even referred to the then 37-year-old as a 'young-up-and-comer' before continuing: "Half his teammates could be his kids. We're getting old, David. Although you're holding up better than me."
