Man Utd loanee Ethan Ennis explains how he has improved since joining Fleetwood Town

Manchester United prospect Ethan Ennis has reflected on his transformative loan spell at Fleetwood Town, detailing the significant strides he has made in his development this season.

There are Manchester United players out on loan this season.

The aim for the likes of Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund is to secure a permanent move away from United, whereas youngsters such as Ethan Ennis and Enzo Kana-Biyik will be hoping to earn a chance in United’s first team.

Of course, loan moves can go many ways. Some are a success with the players in question gaining valuable experience and playing regular football. There are also loan spells that don’t quite go to plan for many reasons, including injuries, as seen with Harry Amass since his January move to Norwich City.

After impressing on loan at Doncaster last season, Ennis has continued to perform at a high standard with League Two outfit Fleetwood Town.

The 21-year-old winger, who joined United’s academy from Liverpool in 2021, has played at wing-back for Fleetwood.

Ennis has made 28 appearances in League Two thus far this season.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Ennis opened up on having to play a different role following his loan move. He took his opportunity and is seeing the rewards.

“The old gaffer was here when I first came in,” Ennis said.

“He mentioned that he played with a back five, but he was bringing me in to have the option to play a four as well.

“I played in the 10 a couple of times earlier in the season, but, as I said before, circumstances led me to play at wing-back.”

This has led to Ennis improving as a player, perhaps making him more rounded and versatile. Either way, it’s a chance to play regular football at the senior level.

He added: “I think I’ve improved across all bases. I’ve improved a lot defensively, one-on-one and in positioning in general. And then, yeah, I just think playing to my strengths and affecting the game as much as possible.

“I want to put myself in good stead, being able to play any of these positions, like on the left, right, or as a wing back. I’ve even played on both sides as a wing-back this season, so I think being able to show that versatility is important.”

Ethan Ennis hails Ruud van Nistelrooy and Bruno Fernandes impact

Ennis also revealed some stories about his time at United in the interview, including the help he received from senior figures in the dressing room.

Former coach and legendary striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was hailed for taking time out with the young lads, but the same is said about Bruno Fernandes.

“For the short time Ruud was there, he was always good with the young lads,” Ennis added.

“I think he was very positive and was a ‘look on the bright side’ kind of coach. He wanted to get the best out of people. Bruno [Fernandes] has always got time for the lads from the academy as well.”
