Shea Lacey has made an eagerly anticipated return to Manchester United training after recovering from injury to give Michael Carrick an additional option ahead of the final nine games of the season.
Shea Lacey became one of the latest Manchester United academy graduates in December 2025, when he came off the bench to replace Leny Yoro in the 85th minute in a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.
The highly-rated midfielder, aged 18, is considered a significant part of the club’s long-term future after starting his first professional contract in April 2024.
Lacey has made three appearances in total for the first team, with the latest coming in United’s 2-1 defeat against Brighton in the FA Cup. The youngster was sent off for a second yellow card in the 89th-minute.

Shea Lacey’s return to training is a welcome boost for Michael Carrick
Although Lacey has performed for the youth teams since his dismissal against Brighton, scoring six goals in three Premier League 2 appearances, the youngster has yet to make an appearance in the first team since Michael Carrick became United’s head coach until the end of the season.
Lacey was named on the bench in United’s 3-2 win over Fulham, but an injury has ruled him out of action since February 2.
United never confirmed the diagnosis of Lacey’s injury, but Samuel Luckhurst from The Sun claims the academy graduate has returned to first-team training. His post on X read: “Shea Lacey is back in first team training with #mufc after missing around a month through injury.”

It’s worth noting that Lacey has had his struggles with injuries in the past, so there will be a reluctance to rush him back into action unless he is fully recovered and match fit.
Still, it can be argued that this is a major boost for Carrick.
Lacey is a winger who prefers to attack from the right flank, but with Patrick Dorgu’s injury and the lack of options on the left wing, an opportunity could arise in a less familiar role.
Carrick would benefit from having stronger attacking options on the bench, too.
Lacey’s ability to cut in from the right flank and shoot from distance, plus the fact that he’s an unknown talent as far as opposition players in the Premier League are concerned, makes him a dangerous prospect.

Shea Lacey is a victim of Man Utd’s reduced fixture load
Not only did United fail to qualify for European football last season, but the Red Devils were also knocked out in the early stages of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Lacey is a prospect who would have likely featured in more cup games had United not fallen at the first hurdle in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
It remains to be seen if United will decide to keep Lacey’s development in-house next season or if they opt to send the youngster on loan.
Hopefully, Lacey makes the bench when United host Aston Villa on 15 March.
