Manchester United have been urged to change their mind on Casemiro and keep the Brazilian beyond this season, with club icon Bryan Robson adamant he remains a "top player" who could "give the team a little bit more".

It was recently announced that Casemiro would leave Old Trafford after four seasons. The midfielder cost £70million when he joined under Erik ten Hag and has endured a mixed spell at Old Trafford, initially making a big impact before tailing off. But he has found a new lease of life this season after confirming plans to leave the club.

The ex-Real Madrid star has been a serial Champions League winner and, at 34, is still more than capable of doing a job. And Robson is adamant that United should reconsider things with Casemiro still having a huge amount to offer - even if the lack of clarity over the club's head coach position could cause issues on that front.

The Red Devils legend told BoyleSports: “I would encourage Casemiro to stay. He’s had a really good season this year. He’s a top player. He’s got a great football brain. He’s a really good passer of the ball. He heads the ball well and when he goes in to tackle, he means it.

“You don’t stay at Real Madrid for the amount of years he did and win Champions League titles if you’re not an absolute top player and people see what you’re really good at. So I think next season he could definitely give us a little bit more with his experience. He was great in Europe last year too.”

The club are seeking to add at least one midfielder to their ranks this summer. It is seen as a priority position but Casemiro has been a regular ever since Carrick was made manager until the end of the season, and his experience has proved a huge asset. No wonder, then, that the man at the helm has been hugely complimentary.

“Yeah, I've got to say, Case has been fantastic since I came in, really, on and off the pitch,” Carrick said recently. Experience is a great thing if you use it in the right way. And again, I think over time, being a senior player here is almost the responsibility of the example and helping the young players, helping the rest of the boys and passing on your experiences in a positive way.

“He's been top since I came in, in so many ways, and he's been a pleasure to work with, and I look forward to continuing with him for a few months yet.”
