Manchester United could be presented with a surprise opportunity in the summer transfer window after Borussia Dortmund confirmed that midfielder Julian Brandt will leave the club as a free agent at the end of the current season.
The announcement means Brandt will be available without a transfer fee, immediately attracting interest from several European clubs. Manchester United are among the sides reportedly monitoring the situation as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of next season.
Sporting CEO Lars Ricken broke the silence regarding the Germany international’s future following Dortmund’s 2-1 victory over Koln. Speaking in a post-match interview with Sky, Ricken addressed the speculation that had been mounting for months. “There have already been a few reports. The fact is that there were open discussions and it was agreed that the expiring contract would not be extended,” Ricken said.
“[He’s] played a few hundred games for Borussia Dortmund. I think we can only be grateful to him. He played for us for seven years and was sometimes viewed critically. He will be 30 in a few weeks, we can reorient ourselves, so it can also be an opportunity for both sides. We were ultimately in agreement.
Brandt, 29, has been a key figure for Dortmund in recent years, known for his creativity, vision and technical ability in the final third. Capable of playing both as an attacking midfielder and in wider roles, the German international has built a reputation as a versatile playmaker who can unlock defences with intelligent passing and movement.
For Manchester United, the chance to sign an experienced attacking midfielder on a free transfer could prove extremely appealing. The club is expected to reshape parts of its squad during the summer window, and adding depth in creative areas has reportedly become a priority.
A move to Old Trafford would also offer Brandt the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League, widely regarded as one of the most competitive leagues in world football. At this stage of his career, the midfielder may see the challenge of English football as an attractive next step.
However, several factors could determine whether United pursue the deal. Competition for Brandt’s signature is expected to be strong, particularly from clubs competing in the UEFA Champions League. Teams across Germany, Spain and Italy are also likely to consider a move for a player of his experience and quality, especially given that no transfer fee would be required.
Another consideration will be Manchester United’s own squad planning. The club already has a number of attacking midfield options, and any decision to sign Brandt could depend on potential departures or tactical changes ahead of next season.
From Brandt’s perspective, the prospect of joining one of the world’s most famous clubs could be appealing. Despite a challenging period in recent years, Manchester United remain a global powerhouse and continue to attract top-level talent.
If Manchester United decide to act, signing Brandt on a free transfer could represent a low-risk move that adds experience, creativity and depth to their squad ahead of a crucial new season.
