Man United’s£80m‘mistake’has quietly turned into a 2026 priority in remarkable turnaround

Manchester United and transfer window mistakes are never far away from each other, but their £80m mistake has quietly turned into a summer of 2026 priority.

The midfield will be Man Utd’s position of urgent need in the summer of 2026, and more positions like full-back and winger will come into the picture, too.

Ineos have already earned enough trust for Man Utd fans to rest easy about the transfer window, but not all the business will be in external negotiation.

Their quickly increasing priority is internal, in the form of an £80m mistake who has completed a remarkable turnaround at Old Trafford.

Harry Maguire is Man Utd’s £80m mistake-turned-priority

If there was a time machine and you spoke to United fans in 2021, they would probably laugh at your face if you suggested that they would be begging for Harry Maguire’s extension in five years’ time.

The Glazer regime, led by the infamous Ed Woodward, got rinsed by Leicester for Harry Maguire, as United paid the full £80m fee up front.

Maguire did play well under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but soon became a lightning rod for criticism as the Norwegian’s spell cratered.

There was a time when Maguire became unfairly painted as the symbol of incompetence at Old Trafford, and he was often close to leaving the club.

However, since that low phase, Maguire’s mental fortitude has shone through as he fought back to relevance under multiple managers.

With his contract expiring in the summer of 2026, he is now staging his biggest comeback act as a part of Michael Carrick restoring the veteran spine of Man Utd.

As it stands, Maguire is the first name on the teamsheet and is quickly taking Ineos’ decision on his contract out of their hands.

United simply don’t feel solid enough without Maguire in their ranks.

Man Utd will reward Maguire in a full-circle moment

From a player who came to personify everything wrong with the club’s transfer policy to a player who’s forcing Ineos to break their transfer policy, Maguire has come a long way.

It’s not the Ineos way to hand out big contract extensions to players north of 30, especially ones like Maguire, who are on high wages.

However, Maguire has now proven what was thought all along.

His game was never based on pace and explosiveness, two things that collapse first with age. He was always an extremely intelligent football player, something that increases with experience.

Maguire is ageing like fine wine, and that should see United reward him with an extension as one of the first tasks they do in the summer of 2026.

Thanks to the immaculate professionalism of Maguire, one of Ed Woodward’s worst-ever deals looks palatable now.

From an £80m mistake to an extension priority in the summer, Maguire might well spend a decade at this club now, and for good reason.
