Man United are expected to target a midfield rebuild this summer transfer window
Manchester United are heavily reported to be targeting the signings of multiple top midfielders this summer and an update has emerged on one of their major targets.
The Red Devils prioritised signing attacking talent last year and a similar level of spending is expected this summer, with midfield and defence thought to be the main positions the club are hoping to strengthen while another attacker could be signed if Marcus Rashford departs permanently.
Several top Premier League midfielders have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with top targets expected to include the likes of Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba. Another amongst those is Sandro Tonali, who is thought to be on the radar of a number of top clubs in England and beyond.
Real Madrid spotted on Tonali scouting mission
Reports from The Sun state that Real Madrid have ‘joined the race’ for Tonali and were spotted scouting the Italy international as Newcastle United were defeated by Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday evening.
Los Blancos had scouts present at St. James’ Park over the weekend as their previous links with a move intensify, while United, City, Arsenal and Liverpool are also thought to be amongst those considering a stunning swoop of potentially up to £100million for Tonali.
Reporting continues that Tonali has yet to make a firm decision over whether or not he wishes to depart this summer, but Newcastle may find themselves in a tough spot should they fail to qualify for Europe this term. It was previously reported that the player would prioritise a move to Italy if it were financially viable, while becoming a Galactico at Real Madrid might ultimately be a difficult proposition to turn down.
What Tonali has said on his uncertain future
Tonali spoke to The Sun on his future in November and his words reflected that nothing is yet decided for the 25-year-old ahead of what could be an important summer in his career.
He said when asked about his long-term future: “This is a tough question because, you know [in] football you need to think year for year. The last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football.
“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here ten years,’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”
